BANGKOK - This top Hong Kong entertainer was being treated on Wednesday for a pelvic injury after he was thrown off a horse during a film shoot in Thailand.
His company has confirmed, Andy Lau who also topman Global Limited, a subsidiary of the Lau-founded Focus Group, that the 55 year old actor, singer and producer was seriously injured in the accident on Monday.
“Mr Lau is now under the care of a medical team and everything is fine at present. There is no cause for worry,” the statement said shortly after that news surfaced.
Apple Daily reported earlier that Lau arrived in Thailand on Monday and worked on the shoot near the capital, Bangkok.
During the shoot, the horse reportedly lost control, throwing Lau to the ground and stepping on his back, fracturing his lower back. Lau was taken to a local hospital first, before arriving at the Hong Kong airport late on Wednesday night. He was then sent to the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital in Happy Valley.
Lau is one of the city’s most famous faces, having as well as being a renowned Canto-pop singer appeared in films such as Infernal Affairs and recent Matt Damon release The Great Wall.
He is one of the so called four heavenly kings of Canto pop along with Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai and Aaron Kwok who have dominated the local entertainment scene for decades, and are popular across China.
Retired broadcaster Cheung Man, who coined that name for the quartet in the 1980s, said he was shocked to learn about the accident.
“Lau is the pride of Hong Kong and well regarded among the Chinese communities around the world. He is one of the most hard working personalities in the industry and often gives all of himself to a task,” Cheung said.
Cheung recalled his wife Candy Chea Shuk-mui, a veteran presenter at RTHK, hosted Lau for a two-hour show a few months ago.
“Now he has a family, so I hope he will get well soon before the new Year of the Rooster for a reunion with his family,” he said.
