LONDON - A couple who tied the knot less than 18 months ago are planning to renew their wedding vows after the groom has finished transitioning into a woman. Tamsin and Teresa Worrall, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, married in September 2014, before Tamsin's name had been legally changed from Tim.
Tamsin, who lived as a married father of two for more than 15 years, has started taking a course of oestrogen and testosterone blockers and is hoping to complete her transition in the next 18 months. And she is already looking forward to renewing her vows, this time in a wedding dress as Tamsin, rather than in a pink suit as Tim.
The couple met in 2012, three years after Tamsin's first marriage collapsed when she realised she could no longer live as a man.
"I always knew there was something different about me but I never knew what it was. It look a while for me to realise that gender was the problem. Eventually I bought myself a black lacy pair of knickers, took them back to the house and waited until everyone had gone to bed before I put them on. I pranced around the house feeling very pleased. The more I did it, the more I wanted to do it and there was a slow realisation that I wanted to wear makeup and dresses," Tamsin said.
"Eventually I bought myself a lipstick and I would wear it at the same time as wearing the knickers. I would occasionally wear them with tights, but I always laddered them. I was desperate to wear the knickers underneath my clothes but I used to think, "what if I get run over?'' The couple eventually grew apart and separated in 2009," she added.
Once she was living on her own, Tamsin started doing research into transgender clothes shops and eventually was given a full makeover.
"That was when Tamsin truly came out. I bought complete sets of underwear, skirts and blouses. When I looked in the mirror for the first time I actually liked the person who smiled back at me," she said.
She eventually plucked up the courage to join a dating website and registered herself as a transgender woman, and 12 months later she met nurse Teresa.
On their first date Teresa met Tim, but said her wife has always been open about her gender. Teresa's two adult daughters even help Tamsin with hairstyle tips and clothes shopping.
"At the time (Tamsin) was just dressing up part time. When I first spoke to Tamsin on the phone I thought "that's a deep voice". We talked at length about how she felt," Teresa said.
"When I first met Teresa I thought she was gorgeous. She accepted what I wanted to be. We got on like a house on fire. It was love at first sight. I knew we were going to be together," Tamsin said.
