JAKARTA - The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of the New Paradigm (PB) and the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) agreed to eradicate the rampant cartel, monopoly and oligarchic mafia in the Indonesian business world, including the alleged salt price game.

Both sides see the source of business imbalances for the past dozens of years, due to monopolistic practices, cartels and oligarchs of certain commodity trades by a group of powerful entrepreneurs.

"Therefore, we build strategic, sustainable and long-term cooperation," said Chairman of
KPPU, Syarkawi Rauf after receiving Kadin PB board chaired by Vice Chairman of Kadin PB Zainal Bintang at KPPU office, Jakarta, Tuesday (29/8).

The practice of cartel, oligarchy and monopoly, especially the basic materials made by big businessmen make small entrepreneurs or MSMEs can not grow, even worse. Although the protection and fostering of UMKM is regulated in Law 20/2008 on MSMEs, but the practice of the Act has not succeeded in paving the way for small entrepreneurs to be able to take part in a healthy way.

One example of cartel practices, oligarchy and monopoly, said Syarkawi is the alleged salt price game lately.

"Including the alleged presence of a group of importers who deliberately made the price of salt at the local farmers level lower than the proper price. The process of investigation is on the way," said Syarkawi.

Kadin itself, added Zainal, assesses some things that need special attention in developing SMEs is the development of superior products that are competitive and can improve welfare, and MSME today not only growing in terms of numbers but able to impact on the regional economy and micro improve people's welfare.

"The fate of UMKM perpetrators so far is only as a complement to the patients," said Zainal.

Syarkawi also explained that Indonesia will host the 13th East Asia Top Level Official's Meeting on Competition Policy (EATOP) or the East Asia Senior Official Meeting on Competition Policy to be held in Bali on 6-7 September 2017.

The purpose of the meeting, is to encourage healthy business competition can be more developed from the present, especially for the East Asia region.

"We will raise two strategic issues, one on the issue of food and then share experiences with other countries," said Syarkawi.

The EATOP meeting will be attended by high-ranking officials of the competition supervisory committees of ASEAN member countries and other countries from East Asia such as Japan, Korea, People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mongolia and Australia.
