JAKARTA - After meeting with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and holding a press conference, President Director of PT First Anugerah Karya Wisata (First Travel) Andika Surachman and his wife Anniesa Desvitasari Hasibuan were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) National Police on Wednesday (9/8).

Both were arrested on suspicion of fraud because they did not dispatch the umrah pilgrims.

"The perpetrator mode is promising by offering
low cost for umrah but never depart," said Head of Public Information Division of Public Relations Division of Police Headquarters, Brigadier General Rikwanto, Thursday (10/8).

Both were arrested at the office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) around 14.00 pm.

"We have examined eleven witnesses, both of whom were charged under Articles 55 to 378, 372 of the Criminal Code and Law No.19/2016 on ITE," Rikwanto said.

Determination of the suspect's status is based on two evidences showing both of them to commit fraud.

"From this day the suspect was detained in Rutan Polda Metro Jaya," said Director of Public Crime, Brigadier General Herry Rudolf Nahak at Bareskrim Headquarters, Jakarta, Thursday (10/8).

According to Herry, police will conduct a search of the suspect's office and home to seek additional evidence.

Until now, he said, there are 30,000 prospective Umrah pilgrims who have not yet departed.

"Total 70,000 pilgrims, 35,000 of them are already departed, while the rest are not," he said.

There has been no confirmation from the First Travel related to the arrest of both.

Separately, the House of Representatives (DPR), especially Commission VIII committed to continue to accompany First Travel victims who are alleged to have cheated and fled their money. Member of House Commission VIII, Maman Imanulhaq said the victims should immediately receive the money back.

"We have a working meeting with the Director General of Hajj and Umrah to discuss this, we will continue to accompany the victims of the pilgrims to get their total rights back," said Maman at the House of Representatives building, Jakarta on Thursday (10/8).

He also appreciated the actions of law enforcement officers to capture the owner of First Travel which is considered to be very detrimental to the congregation. Maman urged First First to pay off all accounts receivable and pilgrims before legal action.

"I am worried that the arrest of First Travel owner will not back pilgirms fund,"
