NEW YORK - The public have voted, and the sports stars have spoken; Donald Trump, the newly elected US president, alongside former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen, and former Manchester United player Phil Neville.
As Europe awoke on Wednesday morning to the news that Donald Trump had been elected the new president of the United States, sports stars weren't shy in sharing their thoughts on the Republican's victory.
The athletes' responses were a mixture of lamentation, grim acceptance a few pockets of positivity and more than the odd joke, as the unexpected Trump victory was confirmed.
While some were keen to move on quickly and get back to the ongoing cricket match between India and England, others wished they had thought on and put some money on the outcome.
TV presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker was among those registering general disbelief at the result, while Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen tweeted: "Can't believe what I'm seeing. This is so embarrassing."
Fellow Belgian defender Vincent Kompany added on his own social media account: "Let's put all the idiots around the world in power and see what happens."
Australian double world champion track cyclist Annette Edmondson posted her mock congratulation: "The day hate won. Well done America," while football pundit and former Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage used the election as an opportunity to troll his old teammate Paul Dickov.
Not everyone was so downbeat, however, with sports promoter Eddie Hearn noting wryly that, given voting patterns on the UK's weekly hit TV singing contest 'The X Factor', nobody should be surprised at Trump's triumph.
Erstwhile England cricket captain Michael Vaughan was phlegmatic despite insisting he would have preferred a Hillary win.
"Anyway forget Trump," Vaughan told his Twitter followers, indicating we would all do much better to follow the cricket and an excellent first innings from England's Joe Root.
News began to filter out to the masses, meanwhile, that a golden opportunity to take a bumper-payout from the bookies had been missed by, surely, everyone in the world - including football pundit and former Manchester United star Phil Neville.
Anyone who had the foresight to cobble together a treble bet on a successful Brexit vote, Trump winning the US presidential election, and Leicester City winning the Premier League will now be picking up their £15million winnings in an articulated lorry, most likely.
Stoke City's US national team utility man Geoff Cameron brought some positivity to the pervading gloom, tweeting: "The people have spoken! Its time for America to come together."
It remains to be seen if many more in the sporting world will be struck by optimism as the Trump presidency gets into full flow.
