QUEENSLAND - Four people died after an accident on a water ride at a theme park in Australia. The tragedy happened on a rollercoaster at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
It is believed a circular carriage on the Thunder River Rapids 'flipped' on a conveyor belt at around 2pm local time. The ride is one of the slower attractions at the park and is suitable for children as young as two. But it is understood no children were involved and all the victims are adults.
Witness Lia Capes said she was just about to go on the ride when she saw people fleeing in tears.
"We saw little girl and we believe it was her mum because it was just her and her little sister that was an infant," Ms Capes said.
"I was speaking to one of the guys and he said it was the raft or the boat thing in front of him, the whole thing flipped and everyone was screaming."
"Four people have been critically injured at Dreamworld. There is nothing further we can confirm at this stage," police said.

Dreamworld later confirmed at least three people have died.
"Dreamworld confirms there has been at least three fatalities at its theme park in Queensland today. Dreamworld is working as quickly as possible to establish the facts around the incident and is working closely with emergency authorities and police to do this.We focus and priority is with the families of those involved in this tragedy and will be providing an update to the public as soon as information becomes available," company said in a statement.
The ride was closed in April this year due to a "serious incident" involving the conveyor belt "slipping", according to the Courier-Mail. The 34 year old ride was closed for the weekend for an inspection but then passed safe by inspectors to re-open.
American Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz Jnr. appears to have been on the ride at the time, but escaped unharmed.
He tweeted: "Dude! Just got off a ride 15 mins ago that has 1 person seriously injured & 2 others trapped #Dreamworld"
