GLASGOW - Two Canadian pilots were arrested on the suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol shortly before they were due to take off on a flight to Toronto from Glasgow.

As reported New York Times, police officers hauled the male pilots from the cockpit of the Air Transat’s A330, causing the flight to be delayed for more than 20 hours.

Passengers expressed their relief and annoyance on Twitter, with one thanking Scotland Police for preventing a potential tragedy:

A Scotland police spokeswoman told the New York Times that even a “wee bit” of alcohol in a pilot could bring about legal proceedings. A pilot cannot exceed nine micrograms of alcohol in a 100 millimetres of breath in a breathalyser test in Scotland.

“We will await the results of the investigation and judicial proceedings before commenting on the matter, before making any further comments. The safety of our crews and passengers is, and will remain, a top priority at Air Transat,” Air Transat statement confirmed its employees arrest.

For known, two Canadian pilots, Jean-Francois Perreault (39) and Imran Zafar Syed (37), were arrested on Monday July 18 shortly before they were due to take off on the Air Transat flight from Glasgow Airport at 1pm.

Both pilots, who are personally facing charges, have received an administrative suspension for the duration of the carrier's internal investigation.

The men were remanded in custody when they appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court last Tuesday, charged under section 93 of the Railway and Transport Safety Act, which covers alcohol and drug limits in aviation.

Section 93 of the Act states: 'A person commits an offence if he performs an aviation function at a time when the proportion of alcohol in his breath, blood or urine exceeds the prescribed limit, or he carries out an activity which is ancillary to an aviation function at a time when the proportion of alcohol in his breath, blood or urine exceeds the prescribed limit.'

For pilots, the limit of alcohol in the case of breath is nine microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres, according to the Act.
