DENPASAR - Manchester United (MU) and England defender Chris Smalling has been rushed to hospital suffering from food poisoning while on holiday in Bali.

A picture emerged of the 26 year old lying on a gurney with his head, neck and left hand bandaged amid claims he had been stung by a jellyfish. He was seen to be penning an autograph on a replica Manchester United shirt while being seen to by doctors.

Smalling has since been given the all clear after being checked over by medical staff on the Indonesian island, with United saying he fainted after a bout of food poisoning.

"Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday. The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine. Smalling is currently on vacation following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month," a statement released on the club's official website.

The central defender travelled to Asia after England were dumped out of the European Championship by Iceland. He has been handed time off by Jose Mourinho before joining the United squad for pre-season training at Carrington in the coming weeks.

Smalling often spends time relaxing in Bali with partner Sam Cooke. Claims that he was surfing when the accident happened are understood not to be correct. The photograph on social media includes medical notes with his correct date of birth.

Mourinho is back at Carrington this week as United’s squad return to the club ahead of the new season, although many of those who participated in international competitions have been afforded leave.

Mourinho arrived in Manchester late on Sunday night as he bids to narrow the gap between themselves and their Premier League rivals. He is set to speak publicly for the first time as United boss on Tuesday.
