BAGHDAD - ISIS gunmen stormed the meeting in Baghdad, killing at least 14 of the football fans who were gathered at a cafe, after taking exception to the sport, which they deem as un-Islamic.

Twenty more were wounded in the attack in the town of Samarra, 125 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital.

President of the Samarra supporters club Ziad Subhan said a group of Islamic terrorists "from ISIS came into the café armed with AK-47s, shooting at random at everyone who was inside".

"They (ISIS) don't like football, they think it's anti-Muslim. This is a terrible tragedy," he added.

Members of the Samarra supporters club meet regularly to watch live Real Madrid matches or to watch repeats of old games if there are no televised matches.

Graphic photos uploaded on social media showed a chaotic scene in the aftermath of the attack, with bullet holes and pools of blood covering the floor.

The militants reportedly fled the scene before carrying out a second attack hours later when one of the assailants set off an explosive device strapped to his chest at a nearby market.

Police and rival militia members cornered the bomber in a disused building and exchanged gunfire before he detonated the suicide vest, reports said.

Four people were killed and two badly injured in that attack, medical sources said.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for a strong of deadly attacks in the Iraqi capital this week, including on Thursday when more than 100 people were killed in separate suicide bombings.

In the first attack, an SUV packed with explosives detonate near a beauty salon in the largely Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City.

Today's attack also took place in a predominantly Shiite neighbourhood, forming part of a trend of sectarian violence that threatens to engulf Baghdad after a relative lull in violence in recent years.

Security has gradually improved in the Iraqi capital but violence against both the security forces and civilians remains a common problem.

In March a suicide bombing at a football stadium near Baghdad left more than 40 dead and 100 injured.
