JAKARTA - 15 November 1964, the Army Weapons Procurement Director Gen. Hartono announced Indonesia would be tested an atomic bomb in 1969. He said about 200 scientists are working to produce the atomic bomb.
Following the July 24, 1965 President Sukarno declared, "It is God's will, Indonesia will soon produce its own atomic bomb," he said as quoted by Robert M. For Sukarno, an atomic bomb is intended to "safeguard the sovereignty and safeguard the homeland."

International public was shocked. Western countries and allies worry and protest. Australian Defence Minister Shane Paltridge said Hartono statement should not be underestimated.
