HAVANA - Ramon Castro, older brother to Fidel and Raul Castro, has died. Cuban state media reported Tuesday (24/2). He died in 91 old years.
A farmer all his life, Castro supported his brother's revolution but did not take an active role in the armed struggle that brought Fidel Castro to power in 1959. Castro continued to work in agriculture after the revolution, and was often seen driving around Havana on a tractor.
Although aiding the guerrilla movement led by his brothers that seized power in 1959, Castro did not take up arms. Like his brothers, he was jailed by the former government of strongman Fulgencio Batista in 1953, years before Fidel Castro led the revolution that toppled Batista on Jan. 1, 1959. Nicknamed Mongo, Ramon Castro organized several of the guerrillas' supply networks.
During the insurrection, he also helped his parents take care of the large family land holdings in Biran. After the rebels seized power, Castro worked in the sugar and cattle industries.
State media said that he died in the capital Tuesday morning. No cause of death was reported. Castro was rumored to have suffered in recent years from dementia. He sported a long beard and resembled his famous brother Fidel.
Castro's body was cremated and his ashes will be taken to the Castro family farm in Biran, state media said. For to note, Raul Castro died at 84 and Fidel Castro is 89.
