LONDON - Manor dropped British driver Will Stevens suffered F1 heartbreak as his seat at Manor has been taken an Indonesian racer. Rio Haryanto (23) will partner with German racer, Pascal Wehrlein as the tailenders debut two rookies. He fills the last remaining slot on the grid.

Stevens missed out because he could not raise enough finance to out bid Haryanto who has the backing of his own government. As Mirror reported, it is double heart break for Stevens: after a year of gutsy performances with an uncompetitive car and engine Manor are expected to make real progress with the swap to Mercedes power.

The F1 operation described their new signing’s 2015 GP2 season as “robust” after three wins and some impressive early-season performances that saw him finish fourth in the championship.

“We are delighted to announce Rio as our second race driver for 2016. Rio’s been racing since he first got into a kart at six years old. He’s tenacious on and off the track and made a big impression on last year’s GP2 battle. Rio’s huge following in Indonesia is great for the team and for F1. They are keen to see him on the grid and we’re confident that we’ll see him enjoying some exciting battles in the year ahead,” said team’s new Manor owner, entrepreneur Stephen Fitzpatrick.

Wehrlein, dubbed the new Lewis Hamilton, earned his place from the backing of champions Mercedes. He was test driver to the world champions last season and become the sport’s youngest DTM champion in 2015, aged just 21. Two years before he became the formula’s youngest race winner, aged 19.

“Manor Racing is a team with an exciting vision and ambitious plans. They have produced a great package and I can’t wait to get in the car. Melbourne will be a huge moment for me, my country, supporters and fans and I want to thank everyone who’s been with me since I started in single seaters; 2016 is my chance to reward that faith and represent Asia in F1,” Haryanto said.
