Owners of Papua Ulayat Land Comes to Aidenvironment Asia

BOGOR - Conduct of foreign Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) doing black campaign stifle the owners of community's communal (ulayat) land in Papua. They are worried that the action further hamper realization of oil palm plantations in Merauke and Boven Digul districts, Papua.

To find out what the background of that action, representatives of indigenous peoples who are also the owners of communal rights in Merauke and Boven Digoel districts visited Aidenvironment Asia
office, one of the hard-working foreign NGOs opposing the oil palm plantations in Merauke and Boven Digoel.

"We affirm them to stop the interference in the ulayat land, because we are directly affected, not from outsiders," said Simon K Walinaulik, a representative of the ulayat community after receiving by Aidenvironment Asia staff in Bogor on Tuesday (25/7).

He also requested that local and foreign NGOs which voicing the cancellation of land clearing within the area of PT Dongin Prabhawa to stop that action because the company has helped the people of Merauke and Boven Digul districts in terms of health, education and economy.

"We want to change like our brothers and sisters in outside of Papua. So, once again, I'm as Gebse Dinaulik's Chief Marga really expect not to disturb us. We want to move forward like other people," Simon said.

Simon asserted that foreign NGOs should not obstruct their intention.

"It's our land, our right, they can not get in the way," he said.

Meanwhile, Aidenvironment Asia, represented by Operation Manager, Ratih Chandradewi admitted that her side can not comment yet on the request of ulayat land owners in Merauke and Boven Digul districts.

"We just accepted their statement and will learn. So, we can not give a statement at this time," said Ratih.

Previously, the stakeholders of Merauke and Boven Digoel oil industry gathered in Jakarta on Monday (24/7) to discuss the challenges and obstacles of the oil palm plantation industry in Merauke and Boven Digoel districts. Attending the meeting were Merauke Regent Frederikus Gebze, Boven Regent of Merouke Benediktus Tambonop, Member of Commission IV of House H.Hamdhani, Bioref from IPB Nyoto Santoso and community representatives of ulayat rights owners in Merauke and Boven Digoel.
