JAKARTA - Black campaigns waged by foreign NGOs have for destroy national palm oil industry. All stakeholders, including the government, must fight against them seriously.
Member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives, Firman Subagyo, stressed that we must fight foreign NGOs who often attack national palm oil industry. Therefore, the government is expected to be more serious in defending our palm oil industry that has been proven to contribute significantly to the national economy.
"I think black campaigns waged by foreign NGOs are business-driven. It must definitely be fought back," he said after seminar on palm oil held by Asosiasi Pengusaha Indonesia (Apindo) in Jakarta on Wednesday (21/6).
He referred to Mighty Earth (US) and AidEnvironment (Europe/ The Netherlands) that are actively spread false information about Indonesian palm oil industry.
"We want this sector to be protected in the future. Thus, we are working on the establishment of the Palm Oil Law which is currently being discussed by the House of Representatives," said Firman.
He added, palm oil industry has a great economic potential. Palm oil export has contributed US$ 20 billion in one year to foreign exchange.
"Palm oil has a potential to reduce unemployment and can also serve as the answer to the balance between Java and other Islands," said Firman.
He also added that we need to limit the sales of the palm oil industry to foreign parties.
"It only applies for the new sales. The Palm Oil Law arranged by the House of Representatives is almost 90 percent. We should work faster, otherwise we will be far behind Malaysia," said Firman.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Apindo, Haryadi Sukamdani, said that national palm oil industry is part of Apindo and they have to be solid in fighting against the black campaign of foreign NGOs.
Sri Adiningsih, Head of the President Advisory Council (Wantimpres), said that Indonesian palm oil industry is likely to be number one in the world.
"Indonesian palm oil has an important role in the development in Indonesia. I am sure and I have seen it. Palm oil has a great development. It absorbs a lot of labors. Moreover, palm oil export keeps increasing. It leads us to be one of the largest exporters in the world. However, palm oil has not been processed up to downstream sector," she said.
She added that palm oil plantations, particularly smallholdings, have not been significant enough due to the low productivity. Smallholdings have been developed in a quite large area. However, they have not had maximal results compared to private plantations.
The growth of palm oil plantation in Papua is quite high. The labor absorption is also quite high. It leads to the positive improvement on the economy of the people.
Regarding black campaign, Sri considered it as a challenge. As the largest palm oil producer in the world, Indonesia has made competitors feel uncomfortable. It is inevitable that they wage black campaign, including by involving NGOs; namely Mighty Earth (US) and AidEnvironment (Europe/ The Netherlands).
