SURABAYA - East Java police have arrested Burhanuddin from Pasuruan, East Java caused posting derogatory content against President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and police officials on Facebook.
"Under the name of Elek Ngangeni (ugly but always being missed, red), he has uploaded picture of President Joko Widodo as a street flat tire serviceman," said East Java Police Command spokesman, Senior Commissioner Frans Barung Mangera on Friday (9/6).
He said Burhanuddins action could be attributed to him being a sympathizer of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI).
"Burhanuddin is not alone. He is working with others who are now still at large," Mangera noted.
Following Burhanuddins arrest, Mangera has called on the people to take a cue from the case in connection with the use of social media, as their activities on such platforms are visible to several people.
"If the picture being uploaded is that of the president depicting him as a street flat tire serviceman, the uploader may be charged under the law on electronic transaction and information (ITE Law), which we will do," he revealed.
Apart from violating the ITE law, Mangera said other laws may be used to deal with it, including a Criminal Code, for insulting the head of state.
"We are still investigating the case, as the person was only caught last night," he said.
Burhanuddin informed newsmen that no one had ordered him to upload the picture of the president as a street flat tire serviceman. Burhanuddin merely said that he was a sympathizer of FPI, and it was the sole reason behind his actions
