JAKARTA - Former Jakarta governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) decided to drop his appeal against the two-year jail sentence for the interests of all. His wife, Veronica Tan, stated at a press conference here on Tuesday (23/5).
"It is for the sake of all; the interests of all. It means we will not prolong the case. We will just carry out what has been decided," she noted.
On the occasion, Tan also read out a letter from her husband to his supporters in which Ahok thanked them and all the volunteers.
"I wish to thank all who consistently supported me by offering prayers, bouquets, food, greeting cards, letters, and books that have been sent to me so far as well as by holding candle-light vigils," Tan said while reading out Ahoks letters.
Ahok said it was not right to hold demonstrations to protest against the current process that he has been through.
"I am afraid many parties may infiltrate if you (volunteers) hold rallies. Moreover, clashes could occur against those who do not like us," he noted.
Ahok expressed gratitude to all his supporters who had organized rallies and candle-light vigils in accordance with the law in their efforts to fight for the preservation of the Unitary State of Indonesia, the 1945 Constitution, and the Principle of Unity in Diversity.
Ahok was sentenced to two years in jail after being declared guilty of violating Article 156a on religious blasphemy.
He is now held at the Police Mobile Brigade detention center, pending confirmation of his sentence from the higher court where he had earlier submitted an appeal.
Ahok had lost the Jakarta gubernatorial election to former education minister Anies Baswedan in the most heated regional election ever.
This the letter written by Ahok:
House of Detainees, Depok, Sunday, May 21, 2017
To the volunteers and Ahok supporters of my beloved, all those who have undertaken the democratic process wherever they may be.
I have been thinking a lot about what happened to me. I want to thank the brothers who continue to support me in prayer, sending food, greeting cards, letters, books, even by gathering candles.
I know it's not easy for you to accept this fact, much less me. But I have learned so much to forgive and accept all this, for the good of us nation and state.
What a loss the citizens of Jakarta, in terms of congestion and economic losses due to a demonstration that disrupts traffic, is not exactly the same rallies and demonstrations in the process that I am experiencing today.
I allege that many parties will ride if the volunteers rallies, let alone clash with the opposing parties who do not like our struggle. Thank you for doing the obedient demonstrations and lighting candles of struggle, institutions established in NKRI with Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.
Let us show that we believe God is sovereign and in control of every nation's history. We show that we are people who believe in God Almighty must love human beings, surely uphold the truth and justice for fellow human beings.
Gusti Ora Sare. Put your hope in the Lord now and always. Mazmur 131 verse 3. If in my faith I say the lord will work out his plan for my life Mazmur 138 verse 8a.
