SEMARANG - “There’s increasing trend of trafficking in persons in the region that need to be seriously responded by countries in the region. There is no other choice for countries except to step up cooperation in addressing this issue,” M Chandra Widya Yudha, Director for ASEAN Political and Security Cooperation said during the opening of the ASEAN Regional Workshop on Trafficking in Persons, which held in Semarang on 4-5 April 2017.

Started from similar concern and apprehension, Indonesia and the European Union (EU) collaborate in convening the workshop. To widen the scope and range, the workshop is held under the umbrella of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) which has 27 countries and 1 entity (EU) as participants.

“This workshop aims to increase information sharing, coordination and regional cooperation to extend protection to the TIP victims and to eradicate TIP comprehensively.”

In ARF, all countries participants of the ARF have agreed in mainstreaming the TIP combatting efforts through the establishment of priority areas of cooperation in combatting TIP under the mechanism of the ARF Inter-Sessional Meeting on Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (ARF ISM on CTTC). Under these priority areas, Indonesia and the European Union act as lead countries to coordinate all initiatives and activities of ARF on TIP.

The workshop will invite several speakers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministry of Women Empowerment and Children Protection as the member of National Action Plan-Against Trafficking in Persons, Indonesian National Police, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), International Organization for Migration (IOM) Indonesian office, Europol and the European Union representatives.

Countries in the South East Asia are vulnerable against the trafficking in persons, as the country of origin, transit country or as country of destination. According to the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons issued by the UNODC, TIP cases in some countries of the region such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia and Timor Leste tend to increase in current years.

More than that, this type of crime often has strong link with the organized transboundary crime syndicates that have caused loss in terms of the amount of victims or the socio-economic loss. Europe is the destination of trafficking with the largest number of the countries of origin, while the number of victims of trafficking in persons from Asia are the largest in the world in terms of the destinations.
