Papua Government Urging Freeport Pay USD376 Million

JAKARTA - Papua government is urging Freeport to immediately pay $376 million (Rp3.4 trillion) in taxes and penalties after a court ruled against the US mining giant in a water use case.
Papua governor, Lukas Enembe said Friday (29/1) that the Tax Court ruled Jan. 17 that Freeport should pay much higher taxes on water the company drew from two Papua rivers between January 2011 and July 2015 to suspend tailings from its mining operations.
PT Freeport Indonesia, said Enembe, over the claim for taxes on water the company used from the Aghawagon and Otomona rivers between 2011 and mid-2015 which used for suspend its tailings.
In this regard, President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Chappy Hakim said he could not comment because they had to learn the new company a few months after he led them.
"I don't dare to comment on today before we finished studying government regulation," said Chappy after attending a public lecture at University of Indonesia, Depok, Friday (27/1).
