MANCHESTER - Belgian midfielder, Kevin de Bruyne produced a midfield masterclass, as Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 in the derby at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Bruyne sold by then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in 2014, showed the Portuguese just how much he misjudged his talent by delivering on the big stage as City extended their 100 percent Premier League win record to four matches.

Pep Guardiola's side top the Premier League table with 12 points from four matches, while United slip to third after dropping points for the first time this season.

City blew United away in the opening stages, and took the lead in the 15th minute when Kevin de Bruyne took advantage of some poor Daley Blind defending to nip on to Kelechi Iheanacho's flick on before steering a cool finish past United goalkeeper David de Gea.

And the Belgian set up the Nigerian youngster for the second on 36 minutes, the 19 year old tapping in after de Bruyne's angled shot had hit the post.

United were being overrun in midfield, with Jesse Lingard and Wayne Rooney anonymous and Henrikh Mkhitaryan completely off the pace in his first Premier League start.

Jose Mourinho may have lost the tactical battle, but United were thrown a lifeline on 42 minutes, when City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo dropped a Wayne Rooney free-kick into the box, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic arced his body Cantona '96 style to drive home into the empty net.

Mourinho made two changes at the break, admitting his selection error by replacing Lingard and Mkhitaryan with Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera.

And it was Rashford, the academy graduate from Wythenshawe, who again revitalised this expensively-assembled United team, setting up a chance for Ibrahimovic on 48 minutes then seeing a 71th-minute goal chalked off for offside after the Swede got a slight touch on his shot.

United were equally inspired by the travails of Bravo, who looked all at sea at being thrown into a Manchester derby on his Premier League debut.

The City goalkeeper, signed for £17m from Barcelona in August, almost gave away a penalty on 57 minutes after his heavy touch gave Rooney a chance to nick the ball back, but referee Mark Clattenburg ruled the Chilean's flying challenge on the England captain was a fair tackle.

But City regained their composure as the second half wore on, and were denied a third by the woodwork with 15 minutes to go, as de Bruyne's shot from substitute Leroy Sane's pass hit de Gea's post and rolled along the goalline.
