NEW YORK - A couple of thieves strolled into the Indonesian Consulate on the Upper East Side early Monday and swiped six bottles of vodka, some electronics and a diplomatic vehicle that was sitting right in front of the building
The male and female crooks stumbled upon the keys to the office vehicle while they were inside pilfering the other items, which included a Samsung tablet.
“They didn’t target us. It was random. We are very disturbed with this situation. We hoped New York City was a safe place. I’m very surprised. This is my third year here, and nothing like this has ever happened,” acting Consul General, Benny YP Siahaan told The New York Post.
Siahaan added, he believed the suspects likely chose the East 68th Street building due to the wealthy area it’s in.
The pair, described as being in their 20s, made their escape in the tan Honda Odyssey, which had special consul plates at around 1:30 am.
They were both caught on surveillance video sneaking into the consulate through a side door. The footage shows them inside “rearranging everything” as they rummaged around.
“They looked around and were opening drawers. Then they must have found the keys,” he added.
The consul general believes authorities will likely find the culprits in no time, due to their dimwitted decision to take such an easily recognizable vehicle.
“It was done very carelessly. It was messy because the car had diplomatic plates, so they won’t get far,” Siahaan said.
The incident wasn’t the first time someone decided to burglarize a consulate building on the Upper East Side.
In 2009, a crackhead was busted by cops for breaking into a building on East 86th Street that was reportedly owned by the Bulgarian Consulate.
