BEIJING - Footage shows the shocking moment dozens of cyclists taking part in an official race crashed after a pedestrian walked in front of them.

As reported the People's Daily Online, cyclists were participating in the Tour of Qinghai Lake in western China on July 17 when the pedestrian appeared and started crossing the road at the zebra crossing. Six of the participants were seriously injured while the pedestrian was detained.

The cyclists were passing through a busy crossroads one mile from the finishing line when the pedestrian suddenly appeared and began to cross the road right in front of them in Xining City.

The riders at the front manage to escape hitting the man however the cyslists behind him are not so lucky. One rider appears to hit the man crashing to the floor causing a domino like effect throwing riders to the floor and from their bicycles. The incident took part on the first day of the race.

According to reports, the man didn't even look before he crossed the road.

Video shows the giant pile up caused by the man resulting in serious injuries with some participants forced to withdraw from the race.

Emergency services say that six of the cyclists were badly injured and the pedestrian was detained for jaywalking. Following the crash, several police officers and and race officials were suspended.

The Tour of Qinghai Lake is one of the biggest cycle races in Asia and brings in participants from across the world. The race lasts 14 days and covers three Chinese provinces including Qinghai, Ningxia and Gansu.

This year's competition is held from July 17 to July 30th and will cover a distance of 2,256 miles. 23 teams and 159 riders are set to take part in the race.
