Egyptian Grand Mufti Offered Indonesia be Member of International Secretariat of Fatwas

CAIRO - Ambassador of Indonesia to the Arab Republic of Egypt, Helmy Fauzy paid a courtesy call to the office of Darul Ifta (the Egyptian Fatwas Institution). In that momment, Helmy Fauzy meet Dr. Shawky Abdul Kareem Allam, the Egyptian Grand Mufti. During the meeting, the Ambassador and Dr. Allam discussed the idea to establish an International Secretariat of Fatwas.
Grand Mufti, Shawky Allam wished that Indonesia could participate in the International Secretariat of Fatwas, by nominated an ulama (Islamic cleric) or Muslim scholar from Indonesia. The International Secretariat of Fatwas will consists of ulamas and Muslim scholars around the world.
“This is a good opportunity and an honour for Indonesia to be offered as a member of this prestigious International Secretariat of Fatwa”, said Ambassador Helmy, during the meeting in Cairo (30/5).
Ambassador Helmy praised the iniative of the Grand Mufti to establish the International Secretariat of Fatwas. He emphasized the importance and the urgency of such forum in the dynamics of current global politics.
“I hope that the Eminence Grand Mufti will be indefatigable in giving enlightement to the west of the essence of Islam, for there are some groups which distorted the true essence of Islam,” said the Ambassador.
He also invited Grand Mufti to visit Indonesia to give enlightement to Islamic boarding institutions (pesantren) and Islamic higher education institutions.
“It is very relevant to enlighten the Indonesians that the edict of fatwas should not be done carelessly,” added Ambassador Helmy.
Helmy also expressed his gratefulness in particular, for the annual scholarships of Darul Ifta given to 40 Indonesian students in the field of fatwa issuance. This scholarships will assist Indonesia in educating future ulamas who have adequate knowledge and understanding of the balanced and true fatwa issuance.
Also attended the meeting was the Acting Secretary General of Darul Ifta, Dr. Amru Wardani and the Coordinator of Media and Socio Cultural Affairs of the Indonesian Embassy, Ms. Lauti Nia Sutedja.
Darul Ifta has scientific publications on the field of fatwas and religious issues, as well as published a book on 20 religious issue written in Arabic, English and French. The target of this book is youths around the world to give them a comprehensive understanding of the moderacy of Islam.
Darul Ifta took part in countering radicalism headed by terrorist group, ISIS. There is an online article titled “ISIS under telescope” to counter the radical teaching of ISIS. Darul Ifta also has a facebook page titled “Not in the name of Muslims” launched in November 2015 to counter Islamophobia in the west after the Paris attack and the fall of Russian airplane above Sharm el-Sheikh.
