BANGKOK - Believe it or not .. but it really happened. Man in Thailand is recovering in hospital after a python latched its fangs onto his penis while he was using his toilet this week.

Rescuers arrived to find the python's head hanging from the bathroom door, secured by a rope, with the rest of the snake still stuck in the squat toilet at the man's home in Chachoengsao Province, east of Bangkok.Attaporn Boonmakchuay (38) told to Thailand's Channel 7, he struggled with the 3 metre python for half an hour after it came up through the plumbing and bit him on the penis.

This man lost a lot of blood but is now recovering at Chularat Hospital, according to hospital officials.

"I fought it. I called my wife and she went to get the neighbour. It took about a minute for the neighbour to get here. And all of a sudden, while I was holding it, it began to lose some strength so I used my hand to prise open its mouth. Then the snake released its grip by itself," he said from his hospital bed.

He fainted from loss of blood after removing the snake. Doctors said he needed stitches, but should heal well.

"I think he's lucky. We have to watch for infection. If there's none and if the wound is healing well he should be able to go home. But if the bite had gone into the urinary tract it would have been a big problem," hospital director, Dr Chutima Pinchareon said.

Tapo, who has been working in rescue for more than six years, said he's seen snakes in toilets before, but never witnessed a scene quite like this one.

"This is all bizarre. I had witnessed snakes (come) out of toilets many times, and when they bit (it) mostly would be at legs or butts. Not the penis, this is the first time," he told.

Last year two pythons made their way into two Australian toilets in an attempt to find water.

"They're non-venomous, these snakes. They're not something to fear but it's best if you come across them to leave them alone", Queensland snake catcher, Elliot Budd told CNN in September.
