BRADFORD - Footballer Adam Johnson has been sentenced to six years in prison for engaging in sexual activity with a 15 year old fan.
The former England international showed no emotion as he was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court.
Johnson, who played for Premier League clubs Sunderland and Manchester City was found guilty of sexual activity with the teenager following an incident in his Range Rover in County Durham in 2015.
The 28 year old admitted another charge of sexual activity with a child and grooming the girl. Johnson stood with his hands behind his back as Judge Jonathan Rose passed sentence.
He said the victim had been a Sunderland fan who would wait after matches to take pictures of her "favourite player", who knew her age.
"That was known to you to put it another way she had only just turned 15 when you began grooming her, because as you were to admit you found her sexually attractive," he said.
"Your messages to the victim were quite clear, you asked to meet in a secluded place and told her to delete your messages. You were testing the waters, to see how far you could go - grooming her for sexual activity. You kissed her three times. You penetrated her with your fingers, Jonathan Rose added.
"You had every opportunity to enter guilty pleas but chose not to - the consequences of that, your victim was called a liar, by peers, by football fans.
"This will be your first prison sentence, this is all entirely your fault."
Johnson arrives at Bradford Crown Court where he is expected to be jailed after he was found guilty of one offence of sexual activity with a child by a jury there earlier this month.
The former Sunderland and England star smirked as he ran into court this morning to avoid the public glare.
He later chewed gum and chatted casually with security officers in the dock as he awaited sentencing.
A psychologist who analysed Johnson said the former England international developed a sexual disorder through the attention he received from women as a professional footballer.
Psychologist Philip Hopley, told the sentencing hearing the 28-year-old had 'a disregard towards women' which was sparked by his fame.
When asked if Johnson showed “hostility towards women”, Dr. Hopley said: “I wouldn’t choose the term hostility I would say disregard.”
