LONDON - Former Hollyoaks actress, Kelly-Marie Stewart believes that she was left in a wheelchair and suffered a miscarriage after contracting the Zika virus.
Kelly-Marie (31), who played Hayley Ramsey in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, claims she was an early victim of the mosquito-borne illness after travelling to the Dominican Republic nine years ago.
Soon after her trip, she was told that she had miscarried and was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, resulting in her losing the use of her legs at age 21.
Kelly-Marie, who has also worked as an airhostess, decided to speak out after a recent study showed evidence that Zika could cause Guillain-Barré syndrome. She is now urging pregnant women not to travel to countries affected by the virus, which has been blamed for miscarriages and a surge in babies born with brain damage.
Using her married name Lovelady, she told Liverpool Echo.
“I went on holiday for two weeks and while there I came down with flu symptoms, I was aching all over. I put it down to picking up a bug, but I was covered from head to toe in mosquito bites — I looked like a Lion bar. I’d been home a few days and I’d gone back to my normal job at Ryanair and I didn’t feel right, I felt like I was walking on sponge,” she said as reported by The Sun.
The pretty blonde was referred to Aintree hospital after tests revealed a lack of sensation in her legs. She was later transferred to the Walton Centre after her legs collapsed while in hospital and then finally diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome by a specialist in Scotland.
“I was in hospital for ten months. I dropped down from nine stone to five stone because I wasn’t able to get out of the bed. I was completely paralysed from the waist down. I went in on the Wednesday and on the Friday I started with pains, I told them I was miscarrying," she said.
