TASIKMALAYA - Total 24 houses were damaged after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Tasikmalaya district, West Java on Monday.

"Most of them were slightly damaged," Chief of Tasikmalaya District Natural Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD), Alfian stated on Monday evening.

He said that the quake was strongly felt by people living in Tasikmalaya. It was also felt by residents in districts of Bogor, Sumedang, Banjar, Pangandaran, Bandung, and Garut. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

Nine of the 24 damaged houses were in Salawu sub-district, 13 in Cigalontang sub-district, and one in Sukaresik sub-district and Jatiwaras sub-district each.

"Only two houses in Nangtang village, Cigalontang sub-district, were moderately damaged," he noted.

He stated that the quake also damaged a mosque and an Islamic elementary school building in Taraju sub-district.

BPBD officers were still inspecting the affected area to review the extent of damage caused by the quake, he revealed. The epicenter of the quake, which struck on Monday at 1:01 a.m. local time, was located at 8.10 degrees southern latitude and 107.86 degrees eastern longitude, or 58 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya, at a depth of 13 kilometers.

In Garut, one house collapsed due to the quake, and the local authorities have provided assistance to the owner of the house.
