MARSEILLE - Harsh lesson learned for England. They did enough to win this but didn't. It ends 1-1. And Three Lions finally broken again.
Russia make it 1-1 in stoppage time. Vasili Berezutskiy tries his luck with a looping header at the back post, with the header having enough power on it to loop over a stranded Hart and into the back of the net. That wasn't in the script.
Eric Dier goal actually had to turn up the England to be able to win in their first game at Euro. But at last gasp Berezutski goal at 92 minute denied England three points. Dier fired in a wonderful free kick from just outside the 18 yard box to give England the lead on 73 minutes, but there was heartbreak late on.
Despite England's impressive first half performance and dominance from the start, the score was 0-0 at the break. England eventually found their goal when Dele Alli fired in a wonderful free-kick from just outside the 18 yard box
England have waited an awfully long time to win their opening match of a European Championship and their desperation at the end of this match will be exacerbated by the way they passed up the opportunity to bury that long run. This was their ninth attempt, stretching all the way back to 1980, and Roy Hodgson’s team ought to be frustrated in the extreme to have surrendered their lead
England’s goal scorer, Eric Dier gives his thoughts on the game.
“We’re very disappointed. We played well the whole game and then to give away the draw like that at the end is very disappointing. It’s not inexperience we didn’t see it out in the right way. We didn’t lose. We have to pick ourselves up again and go again. I thought the level (of performance) was very high. We had it all but we failed to see it out at the end. We’ve got another big game. We’re looking forward to the next one and we’ll go again,” he said.
