NEW YORK - Statement from Solomon Islands Prime Minister (PM) which says "The granting of full membership status for the Union Movement Liberation of West Papua (ULMWP) in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) can be justified because Indonesia has also tried to obtain the status of membership in the regional group is only to protect its own interests, rather than engage in a dialogue about the serious issues of human rights in West Papua," heavily criticized again.

This time critics came from Zaki Mubarok Busro, member of Regional Leaders Participating in Preparatory Committee on ABNJ in United Nation (UN) Headquarters, New York.

Zaky said the support and the acknowledgement rendered by Solomon Islands to West Papua movement can be considered as disrespectful to fundamental principles of international law.

"The baseless argument of human rights issues in West Papua invoked by Solomon Islands PM are sounded since in terms of international law the Indonesia's position remains unchallenged," said Zaky who also PhD Student in Ocean Law and Policy, Australian National Center for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, Australia.

He added there are two underlined relevant principles in virtue of West Papua case, those are, uti possidetis juris and UN General Assembly Rosulution number 2504 og 1969. UN GA Resolution is one of the sources of international law.

For note, Solomon Islands PM, Manasseh Sogavare statement said Indonesia participated in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) only to protect their own interests reap a firm response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia.

"We firmly reject the statement of Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare that appear on Web site of the Secretariat of the Press Prime Minister (Solomon) on May 17, 2016," said Director General for Asia Pacific and African, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Desra Percaya in Jakarta, Saturday (21/5).
