MELBOURNE - Had predicted a proud position in Australian Grand Prix 2016, Indonesian racer Rio Haryanto must swallow bitter pill cause failed to see his first Formula One checkered flag after dropping out of the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday (20/3) due to mechanical failure.
The 23 year old rookie was making his Formula One debut for Manor Racing when the car experienced a driveline problem on the 19th lap, the team said it its Twitter account.
“Rio was having a strong debut so we apologize to him for that,” the team continued. “Rio [...] says although he is sad not to see the checkered flag, he got a good start and enjoyed his first F1 race.”
The breakdown happened nearly the same time as McLaren's Fernando Alonso crashed into Haas' Esteban Gutierrez, just as Alonso tried to overtake the Mexican. The Spaniard's car slammed into Gutierrez's rear tires and the two cars spun out of control before hitting the wall. Both men walked away unscathed. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen also dropped out of the race, when his car caught on fire on lap 24.
German racer Nico Rosberg of Mercedes took home the 2016 Australian Grand Prix title as team mate and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton finished a distant second with eight seconds behind following a dramatic showdown with third place Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. Rio's team mate, Pascal Wehrlein finished last at 16th position.
