BANDUNG - Ministry of Industry in collaboration with the Institute of Technology Bandung establish and Industrial Technology Development Center of Railways to support the development of this mass transportation industry.
I Gusti Putu Suryawirawan, Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics Industry Ministry, said this is the first institution established in Indonesia as a center for the design and engineering of the rail industry.
"All stakeholders should make the vision first, which would be brought to the railroad industry in Indonesia. To develop the railway industry, which is the industry's first built components first," he said, recently.
Putu said the Ministry of Industry has built a number of engineering and design centers such as the National Ship Design And Engineering Center (Nasdec) at the Institute of Technology (ITS) 10 years ago, is now pioneering a similar institution for the aerospace and railways.
"We must prepare for the railway component industry, because if not, we will continue with the import dependency. Import is okay, but should not be a majority, a maximum of 60 percent, especially now that the existing provision of 40 percent local content, "he said.
According to him, PT INKA basically already doing the things done by the engineering and design center, however, the function of the commercialization of state owned enterprises is to make research and development activities only to the client's needs.
"PT INKA has a lot to do this, but train later not only in Java, is planned for in Kalimantan, Sulawesi. Therefore, the design center is expected to initiate the manufacture of fast moving components that can be developed outside Java," he said.
