JAKARTA - Indonesia will participate in the Venice Architecture Biennale (VAB) 2018 which will run for six months from 26 May to 25 November 2018 in Giardini and Arsenale, Venice. The participation of Indonesia in the event that has the theme of 'Free Space' is being prepared by the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) with the Association of Indonesian Architecture (IAI).

The final process of the Open CaII activities or the Curator Selection for Indonesia Pavilion to find a curator who have best idea or theme concept to be the main theme of the Indonesia Pavilion in 2018 at this VAB has entered the final round of judging 5 finalists.

"The selected curator and his team will be in charge of the substance of the exhibition including the design of the Indonesia Pavilion's, book or catalog and various programs of the Indonesian Pavilion. Selection is conducted in two stages aimed at finding a team candidate who can lead the curation process or the preparation of exhibition materials for the Indonesian Pavilion. this should consist of architects and/or designers or artists who have the ability to conduct research, development, exhibition design in original and professional," said Deputy Head of Bekraf, Ricky Joseph Pesik in Jakarta on Sunday (15/10)

The exhibition is expected to be able to make the Indonesian Pavilion not only display the material attractively, but also presents a new contemporary format.

"Indonesian Pavilion curator candidates are expected to submit proposals of exhibition concepts that not only address the major theme of this exhibition by exploring the enormous wealth, development and potential of Indonesian architecture that exists today, but can also arouse, build discourse on how the development of architecture in Indonesia in the future should be," said Ricky who also Chairman of the Commissioner of Venice Architecture Biennale 2018.

He added that during this selection process, Bekraf did not work alone, but cooperated with the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) and individuals representing various professions and expertise.

"Bekraf, IAI and individuals representing various professions are looking for team candidates who can lead the curation process or the preparation of exhibition materials for the Indonesian Pavilion. This team should consist of architects and/or designers or artists who have the ability to conduct research, development, original and professional," he explained.

The Jury itself consists of seven people representing various professions, expertise and institutions. Among these are Ricky Joseph Pesik, Ahmad Djuhara, Gunawan Tjahjono, Budi Lim, Achmad D. Tardiyana, Goenawan Mohamad and Jay Subyakto.

"On October 10, the Judges of the Curator Selection Panel have assessed 41 proposals submitted from 71 teams registering and deciding on 5 proposals that pass the next execution, and this is the second stage of curator selection of the Indonesian pavilion VAB 2018, which is a presentation before the jury," he said.

Deputy Marketing of Bekraf, Joshua Simanjuntak added, the event is also aimed at promoting Indonesian architects in the eyes of the world.

"Actually, the architecture of Indonesia is already known, but not yet global and have a strong positioning," said Joshua.
