JAKARTA - Indonesian hospital administrators are relieved to know a green solution to hazardous medical waste will soon be available in Indonesia.

Ecodas, a world leader in medical waste management based in France, announced its alliance with Indonesia medical supplier and hospital bed manufacturer, PT D&V Medika, to introduce its lauded treatment of medical waste to the country’s hospitals. The two companies announced their collaboration June 5, World Environment Day.

The collaboration with Ecodas says D&V Medika CEO, Stefanus Widananta, comes at an important period given the growing number of hospitals across the country.

“We now have a viable solution for an escalating issue,” Widananta said.

From its base in France, Ecodas exports its product line to over 75 countries in five continents with innovative, fully enclosed and automated systems to sterilize medical waste, reduce its volume, and virtua lly render medical waste unrecognizable from its original form.

“As Universal Health Coverage (UHC) has expanded, sustainable healthcare waste management is becoming more of a priority in health facilities simply because there is just more and more waste to deal with. Yet it is reported that many hospitals do not practice medical waste segregation, and of those who do, many burn their medical waste in the open elevating potential health risks to healthcare workers and nearby communities,” he added.

How safe is medical waste after treatment? The Ecodas process combines shredding, direct heated steam, and high pressure to achieve complete sterilization of infectious materials. The final treated waste is harmless and safe to dispose of as ordinary municipal garbage.

“On this auspicious World Environment Day, we are pleased to announce this historic collaboration with D&V Medika,” said Jeff Squalli, President & CEO of Ecodas.

“We can assure Indonesian hospitals that we have the technology they nee d to keep their communities and healthcare workers, not to mention their environment, free of hazardous waste for a healthier country.” Squalli explained that the undertaking begins with the determination from the medical industry to fully embrace its obligation to the environment and only then does the process begin.

“Hazardous medical waste can burden a village or city with harmful and infected sharp materials as well as toxic liquid, pharmaceutical and laboratory waste that can seep into the ground and w ater systems. It’s best to have biomedical waste treated directly onsite at the point of generation with a certified system or shipped offsite to a permitted treatment facility,” he added.

D&V partner, Vincent Lianto says the collaboration is befitting given this year’s World Environment Day agenda has a global partnership focus.

“We are determined to bridge resources with companies like Ecodas for a sustainable environment based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders and all people,” Lianto said.
