Suspected, Illegal Levies Triggered Riot and Escape in Pekanbaru Prison

PEKANBARU - Hundreds of inmates ran off from the Class IIB Sialang Bungkuk Penitentary, Pekanbaru, Riau at 12:45 p.m. on Friday (5/5). Inmates spreading fear among people living nearby. Situation became tense when prison authorities beefed up security, deploying personnel to pursue the fleeing inmates.

Riau Police deputy chief, Brig. Gen. Ermi Widyatno personally monitored the security measures taken to control the situation. Police officers fired warning shots into the air to force the inmates back to the prison.

Allegedly, the cause of this incident is illegal levies in prisons to be one cause of the trigger escape of prisoners.

During the process of negotiation between the TNI and about one thousand prisoners, one of the demands conveyed is that the prisoners to stop illegal levies and crack down on the prison officers often do illegal levies.

"One of the demands of the prisoners is for the actors who do the illegal payments dealt with firmly," said Riau Police spokesman, Commisioner Guntur Aryo Tejo, Friday (5/5).

Separately, Directorate General of Correctional, Ministry of Justice and Human Rights sent a team to investigate the case of hundreds of residents of Class IIB Sialang Bungkuk Penitentary, Pekanbaru.

The results of investigation will be evaluation for future to prevent similar cases from recurring.

"Tonight we have sent a team and security director there for investigation," said Director General of Correctional, I Wayan Kusmiantha Dusak in Jakarta, Friday (5/5) night.

Until now, he said, officers are still conducting security conditions inside the prison.

"After that we take the necessary action," he explained.

In the pursuit of persecuted citizens, it coordinates with the local police.

"There is something ordered by police chief to handle the pursuit the outside, so as not too far away," he said.

While prison officers who had been held hostage by the assisted citizens, have been released by the army.

"Our officers have been injured because they were pelted by the inmates while the guards were injured because they fell," he said.
