Freeport Canceled Sue Government to Arbitration

JAKARTA - PT Freeport Indonesia withdraw its intention to sue Indonesian government to international arbitration. Freeport plans to sue for issuance of Government Regulation No 1/2017, which requires that US-based mining giant changed the contract of work (KK) status into a special mining license (IUPK) if want to obtain an export permit concentrates.
Secretary General Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Teguh Pamudji revealed in the negotiation process between Freeport and the government during the time, the discourse is never sticking arbitration. Especially at this time, government and Freeport have agreed to negotiate as long as eight months.
"During our discussions with Freeport, 120 days it was never discussed (arbitration). So, between Freeport and the government agreed to eight months," he said at Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Jakarta, Tuesday (4/4).
The government also has agreed to provide temporary IUPK to Freeport for eight months of negotiations. On that basis, Freeport also has regained concentrate on export licenses with the same time period.
"In the context of Freeport, after PP 1/2017 right then comes the choice between IUPK or KK. After negotiations both agreed, so it is possible in the negotiations. So wear IUPK formal form, but in some ways we still respect KK. If the eight-month reached an agreement, Freeport can go right back to KK until 2021. But exports should not concentrate," he said.
