MADRID - In a new MARCA poll, the majority of La Roja fans believe that coach Vicente del Bosque should drop David de Gea.
More than two thirds of respondents to a previous poll had backed the goalkeeper to start for Spain at the European Championship, before news broke on Friday that the 25 year old may have been involved in a sexual assault allegedly committed by Athletic Club's, Iker Muniain .
A witness in an ongoing case against Ignacio Allende Fernandez accused the winger and another player of abusing her, and the Manchester United player is believed to have arranged the meeting.
In a MARCA poll conducted on Friday after the story had leaked, 54 percent said that the Madrid native should be dropped in favour of Iker Casillas.
The results were a sharp change from last week's survey, in which 72 percent of the more than 50,000 respondents wanted De Gea to start.
Although a lot of pressure, Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has not yet said which keeper will be in net for Monday's opener against the Czech Republic.
Vicente del Bosque is standing by David De Gea with the goalkeeper expected to keep his place in the starting line-up for Spain's opening Euro 2016 game against the Czech Republic on Monday.
Unless the situation worsens, the decision is that the Madrileno will begin the game in Toulouse.
The Manchester United stopper has denied any involvement in a court case concerning pornography baron Ignacio Allende Fernandez in which he was alleged to have organised a sex party for teammates.
De Gea said he would be instructing his lawyers regarding the accusation.
The 25 year old has the backing of the coach who said press reports will not change anything.
"We are here to support him at all times and to give him all our love. The boy has explained to us that he had nothing to do with it," he told Teledeporte.
The question of who will be first choice keeper for Spain has been raised many times with Iker Casillas also fighting for the role and the Marquis has always said he has a choice.
The Porto player has been the chosen one for all major competitions, apart from a slight break in the Confederations Cup in 2013, with 167 caps including winning the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
The two keepers have a good relationship and De Gea has a lot of respect for his counterpart. In the past two years, the two have alternated in goal which could lead to a natural transition for the younger man to take over.
However, the controversy surrounding the current issue means any decision on the selection will be accompanied by summary trials in the media and detailed analysis.
