Indonesia Accused Solomon Islands PM 'Violates' Sovereignty

JAKARTA - Related to the statement of Prime Minister (PM) of Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare who said Indonesia participated in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) only to protect their own interests reap a firm response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia.
"We firmly reject the statement of Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare that appear on Web site of the Secretariat of the Press Prime Minister (Solomon) on May 17, 2016," said Director General for Asia Pacific and African, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Desra Percaya in Jakarta, Saturday (21/5) as reported Antara.
PM Solomon Islands on the site says, "The granting of full membership status for the Union Movement Liberation of West Papua (ULMWP) in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) can be justified because Indonesia has also tried to obtain the status of membership in the regional group is only to protect its own interests, rather than engage in a dialogue about the serious issues of human rights in West Papua ".
Responding to the statement of Prime Minister Sogavare, Desra see the statement was clearly violates the basic principles of sovereignty and non-interference, as contained in the MSG Agreement Establishing in 2007.
He said, as the country's third largest democracy, respect for human rights is an important principle for Indonesia. For that reason, Indonesia has ratified eight of nine key human rights instrument of the United Nations and cooperate in various human rights mechanisms.
"In this regard, Indonesia welcomes and is ready to share experiences on the promotion and protection of human rights in many countries, including the Solomon Islands. Accordingly, Indonesia has always welcomed the participation of the Solomon Islands in the Bali Democracy Forum," he said.
Additionally, Desra said, Indonesia has long been committed to addressing human rights issues, among other things by setting up a representative office of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in Papua. Komnas HAM, both at national and regional level, now continue to work to resolve cases of alleged human rights violations in Papua.
Furthermore, he said that as part of the Pacific region, Indonesia has developed partnerships with some of the key countries in the region to ensure strong bilateral relations and productive.
In addition, Indonesia has been actively participating in various regional groups, such as the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) since 1980; Group of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) since 1989. Similarly, Indonesia is also active in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) since 2001 and the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) since 2014.
"One thing that is myopic (do not see clearly) for the Prime Minister Sogavare to speculate that the agenda of Indonesia in the Pacific, especially in MSG, driven solely Papua issue," said Desra.
He added that Indonesia remains committed to contributing to the MSG, expand relations between the government, community, and society in the region.
Indonesia is also committed to strengthening cooperation and overcome challenges together, deepen economic relations and development cooperation for the future prosperity of the nation in the MSG.
"These facts must wake Prime Minister Sogavare to clearly understand the reality and truth," said Desra.
