JAKARTA - Predicted, the world economy could be in peril if the Donald Trump, presumptive Republican Party nominee is elected president.
The real-estate mogul, who announced his candidacy for the 2016 race in June last year, has become known for his controversial calls to deport illegal immigrants and ban Muslim foreigners from entering the US.
"Trump follows a strict and confrontational nationalism," said former Indonesian ambassador to the United States (US), Dino Patti Djalal, recently.
This could adversely affect the US economy, which still has substantial influence on the world economy, said Dino, who is a former deputy foreign minister and also the founder of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia.
"The world economy, which is still very complicated and has poor prospects for the time being, could be further threatened," Dino said.
Trump, whose controversial recent remarks have drawn both widespread protest and support, is also known for his opposition to free-trade agreements.
