China Already Admits Natuna Since 1990

JAKARTA - The emergence of news related to the recognition of China on Natuna issued after Indonesia strongly protested related incidents in the Natuna waters on March 19, 2016, strongly denied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) for China, Soegeng Rahardjo.

"So after that (incident) is recognized, this is supposed to be educated to the public. Actually existing understanding, no claim (of China) since 1990 when we perform normalization with China," said Soegeng on LIPI in Jakarta, Monday (18/4).
Soegeng said the March 19 incident occurred spontaneously only. Therefore, several times China has explained that Indonesian owned Natuna. After the recognition in 1990, China reiterated as that of the former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda then submitted again to the former Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
"Again, we just respect each other, to know each other, each communication so that this future will no longer happen," said Soegeng.
Meanwhile, the Deputy of Social Sciences and Humanities LIPI, Dr. Tri Nuke Pudjiastuti, said Indonesia needs to clarify and strengthen its position regarding disputes in the South China Sea (LCS). As is known, Natuna been claimed that a Chinese territory that is part of the dispute LCS.
"Yes we are not the claimant states (state claimants) in the LCS, but a clear position of Indonesia's policy is needed. We are always keep a balance, but there must be clarity of position, "said Tri.
On 19 March, the ship of the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries catch a thief-flagged fishing vessel China. However, efforts to arrest the try was thwarted by the Chinese coast guard ships by crashing his ship toward the thief ship.
