MEXICO CITY - The week long Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria, a festival in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria, is celebrated in many Central and South American countries.

This event is a South American festival with religious roots has been deemed a cruel blood bath for bulls tortured during the event. The festival happens every February and is expected to take place as usual next month.

In Tlacotalpan, Mexico, the festival is taken to the extreme as locals spend the week drinking homemade alcoholic 'toritos' before a pack of bulls is unleashed on the town. The bulls are force-fed alcohol before the are set loose in the town where they are kicked, slapped and have rocks thrown at them. Some even have their ears cut off by drunk locals. People cut off their ears, kick them.

"There is a new rule that you are not supposed to touch the bulls but after so many 'toritos' it's hard to control," resident Norma Salomon told to Reuters.

Bulls often die during the event. The animals are drowned in the river behind boats dragging them through the water. If the bulls survive they are rounded up and put out to pasture.

Several online petitions have been drafted to end the animal torture-fest, gaining more than 160,000 signatures. This is another example of man's inhumanity to animals, which I simply can't get my head around.

"Fiestas like this take place particularly in Spain and Mexico with the sole purpose seemingly for people to get their kicks by torturing and killing defenseless animals," Dominic Dye of Care for the Wild International said.
