JAKARTA - Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) has expressed doubts that the new commissioners of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the 2015-2019 period could move fast in handling corruption cases because they tend to prioritize preventive measures.
"The five leaders of KPK selected by the Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) tend to prioritize prevention," said Coordinator of the Law and Court Monitoring Division of the ICW, Emerson Juntho during a discussion on "The Fourth Edition of KPK".
The five new leaders are not encouraging because the Parliament seemed to select the figures that agree with the revision of the KPK law, he said.
Those wanting to revise the KPK Law basically intend to weaken the authorities of the KPK, the NGO suspects.
"If the KPK Law is revised, we are worried that the KPK that has been operating well over the past 12 years will be weakened," he remarked.
The legislators also tended to appoint those focusing on the prevention aspect.
If the KPK prioritizes prevention, then it should be changed into the Corruption Prevention Commission, he said.
He regretted that three incumbents of KPK leaders, Johan Budi, Busyro Muggoddas, and Bambang Widjanarko, were not re-selected.
"We believe that the three names could continue the KPK leadership's work," he noted.
The newly appointed KPK leaders are freshmen and they would need to adapt and understand the process to move swiftly in eradicating corruption, according to him.
Meanwhile, Agus Rahardjo was named the Chief of the KPK for the 2015-2019 period Thursday evening after he and four others were voted as new KPK leadership members.
Agus won 44 votes from 43 members of the House of Representatives' Commission III, who used their voting rights in the second vote after first electing the new KPK leadership members.
Basaria Panjaitan garnered nine votes, Saut Situmorang one vote, Alexander Marwata and Laode Muhammad Syarif won no votes.
No one abstained from the vote that was held behind closed doors in which each commission member was only allowed to choose one candidate.
The five members of the new KPK leadership will report before the plenary session of the House on Friday for a final decision by the House of Representatives, House Commission III Chairman Aziz Syamsuddin said
